FM Livni to Secy Rice: There is today hope for peace

FM Livni: We need to remind ourselves where we stood only a year ago, when we faced terror attacks, when the situation in the Gaza Strip led to an understanding that there was no hope for peace.
We launched the Annapolis process. There is now a dialogue between Israel and diplomatic leaders on the Palestinian side. There is hope for peace, which can represent the interests of both sides.

Israeli Defense Minister Barak told Egyptian President Mubarak that he release of the abducted soldier, Gilad Shalit, occupies a place of prime importance on Israel's national agenda and that Israel views Egypt as a central factor in Shalit's return. Barak also conveyed his appreciation for Egypt's efforts in preventing arms smuggling to the Gaza Strip, but emphasized efforts must be made to reduce smuggling even more.

The Government of Israel decided on August 17, 2008 to release approximately 200 Palestinian prisoners in accordance to the criteria set by previous government decisions. The prisoner release was carried out at 09:30 on Monday, 25 August. Through this latest confidence-building measure, Israel seeks to intensify its continued dialogue with partners who are both committed to diplomacy and opposed to terrorism.

The Prime Minister’s Conference for Export and International Cooperation to be held in Jerusalem on November 12, 2008 will mark 60 years of independence and economic achievements. The Southern Wall of Jerusalem, dating to the time of the Hasmonean dynasty, was discovered on Mount Zion.
The southern end of ancient Jerusalem, from when the city was at its largest, was recently discovered in the form of an impressive city wall 2,100 years old.

The global automotive industry is becoming aware of the fact that Israel is the place for innovative materials and new technologies. Leading manufacturers such as Jaguar, Mercedes Benz, BMW, GM, VW, Peugeot, and Volvo are already employing advanced Israeli automotive products in their vehicles. According to Paul Linden, Automotive Innovation Manager for Ashdod-based Emcol Engineering and Manufacturing Co. Ltd, electronics will be the industry multiplier of the future, with driver vision and security leading a strong list of categories, which include new "vehicle to environment" communications systems.

For paraplegics, the dream of walking again must seem like a distant hope. But today, that has changed. Thanks to an Israeli-developed exoskeleton, many wheelchair-bound people will now be able to stand up, walk and even climb stairs. The innovative system, dubbed ReWalk, is based on a wearable exoskeleton - a light support suit with motors at the joints and sensors that, among other tasks, detect upper body movement.

A 2,600 year old clay seal impression bearing the name Gedaliah ben Pashur, a minister in the court of King Zedekiah, has recently been uncovered completely intact during archeological excavations in Jerusalem's ancient City of David, located just below the walls of the Old City. The name appears in the Book of Jeremiah (38:1).
